Year 5 Music Immersion Program

Introduction to the Year 5 Music Immersion Program

Providing your son with an immersive experience in music education is very important to us at Iona College. We know that students who participate in music programs from Primary School through to High School are not only well equipped to manage being a lifelong learner but, thanks to recent research, we know that music students often outperform their non-musical peers in subjects such as Maths, Science and English. [Forbes 2019].

The Year 5 Music Immersion Program is a comprehensive and compulsory music performance course occurring during school time. We offer two streams; the Instrumental and Vocal stream which is a practical program delivered in small groups with highly trained specialists and the Cultural Group stream, a theory-based music program that supports academic music and explores various aspects of cultural identity throughout the world.

Instrumental and Vocal Stream

This is where your son will have the opportunity to explore one of 20+ instruments, including voice, and be part of a larger ensemble that will eventually perform for his family and friends during the year. He will participate in a weekly 30-minute small group lesson learning an instrument or voice. On top of their 30 minute weekly small group lesson they will also spend an entire 70-minute period working together with their peers in an ensemble, learning as a team to play music together. Through instrumental and vocal lessons, combined with ensemble rehearsals, they will develop important, real-world skills such as time management, perseverance, organisation, social skills to name a few. This all takes place during school hours.

Our highest priority is to give the maximum number of students an opportunity to participate. Traditional large ensembles such as the choir, band, and string ensembles, although sometimes filled with instruments at first unfamiliar to the students, allow for the largest number of students to be involved at one time. On occasion, this means that a student’s first preference may not be available.

There is an additional cost to the Instrumental and Vocal stream to enable the delivery of small group instrumental / vocal lessons with a highly qualified and experienced specialist teacher. While this is the preferred stream for all our Year 5 students, we understand that it may not be possible for all families to make this commitment.

Cultural Group Stream

The Cultural Group Stream provides parents and students with an alternative to the Instrumental and Vocal Stream and requires no additional levy.

The Cultural Group is a more theory-based music stream that supports the work they will do in their additional curriculum music class, investigating skills such as score reading and understanding the language of music through explorations of the origins of music culture.

Choosing Your Stream

Parents need to indicate which stream their son will participate in for the whole school year by completing the form at the bottom of this page. Please watch the demonstration videos together with your son before filling out the form.

Vocal and Instrumental Testing

In the first few weeks of Term 1, the boys will take part in listening tests as well as trials in both voice and instrument type to gauge their physical suitability. Following this, an offer will be made to each student to learn a voice or instrument that gives them the best chance of success, based on their submitted preferences, trial results, physical suitability, prior experience, and availability of places across the program.

For more details about the College’s music program, please refer to the Instrumental and Vocal Music Handbook on the Co-Curricular Music page or 07 3906 8908.

Enrolment in the Year 5 Instrumental and Vocal Music Program is a commitment for the full school year, which includes group lessons and participation in an ensemble (guitar ensemble, string ensemble, vocal ensemble or wind orchestra) during class time. The music fees, displayed below, are invoiced in semester instalments with school fees. The fees are current for 2022 and may be adjusted in future.

Group lessons $365 per semester
Individual lessons $730 per semester
Instrument hire $120 per semester, when required
Percussion levy $45 per semester, when required

Please note: Iona College does not have guitars or bass guitars for hire. Boys are expected to own their own guitars.

All sheet music and equipment packs will be available through the Music Department. Additional purchases may be made through the Uniform Shop or your local music store. These packs contain the essential items for every beginner student as well as anything optional. The basic packs range in price from approximately $30 – $90 depending on the instrument.

With access to the highest quality teachers in Queensland, this cost represents extremely high value and cost return compared to other schools or sourcing these resources and activities externally, reflecting our Oblate mission to make excellent education as accessible as possible.

Instrumental and Voice Options

Your son will have the opportunity to choose from the following instruments. Please explore each of these demonstration videos together with your son and complete the confirmation of interest form below, giving details of your son’s musical experiences to date and number your top five preferences for voice and instrument types. It is important to explore all the videos as there may be instrumental and vocal options you have not encountered on their own before and your son’s interest in how they sound can be a key determinant of success.

Please note that drum kit or drums are not offered separately from percussion, and only forms a small part of percussion activities. Students offered a place in percussion will learn a wide range of instruments, including mallet instruments like glockenspiel and xylophone, as well as auxiliary percussion like snare drum and bass drum.
